ethanol energy cycle
Ethanol vs. Petroleum

Should ethanol replace oil as the primary fuel source for the US? Ethanol burns much cleaner than oil based fuels, and gives off relatively low amounts of harmful emissions. It is a renewable energy source, as it is produced primarily from agricultural sources.  On the other hand, ethanol is much more expensive to produce, and has been know to cause motor damage in older vehicles. Is ethanol worth all of the extra expense and problems, or should the US continue to use oil as its primary fuel? Should the federal government encourage and subsidize the use of ethanol as a fuel?
