WHAT’S IN YOUR WATER
BOTTLE?
Since the 1940s adding fluoride to
drinking water has been promoted by local and federal governments, as
well as
dentists, in order to prevent dental cavities. However, controversy
concerning
the fluoridation of water suggests that,
while
successful at staving off some of those cavities, the process may
possibly
generate other health-related issues.
Your assignment
is to research
fluoride. Find out exactly what it is, how it is used and promoted and
why. Explore
the different viewpoints. Are infants and children particularly
vulnerable to
possible harmful effects of fluoridation?
Is there validity to the arguments of anti-fluoridation critics?
Do
current standards of fluoridation need to be reassessed in light of
current
controversy or research? Is fluoridation a valid public health issue in
the 21st
century?
