Polygenetic Analysis of Genetic Risk
Genetic testing has been
available for a while for many conditions caused by a single
gene, such as Huntington Disease or some forms of breast cancer.
But most disabilities and health problems are caused by multiple
genes, and new technology makes it possible to calculate genetic
risk for diseases that have many contributing genetic factors,
such as heart disease or schizophrenia. What are the
dangers of having such information? What are the advantages and
disadvantages of using it as one basis of our system of
medicine? What are the benefits and risks to different groups in
society?
