what is race?

• skin color
• often primary in the way people look at it but not enough to be white
  
• ancestry (ethnicity)
• cultural differences

• legal definitions
• grandmother or great grandmother or 1/64th
• in some states even one drop of African blood
• the way the US has though about race is weird scientifically and weird compared to some other colonial cultures
• scientifically the genetic differences within races are greater than the differences between races
  

how built into our culture is the idea of racial superiority?

are we all the same underneath by biology, or are cultural differences deep?

it was convenient for Europeans to believe that if native people didn't have settled agriculture then they didn't count as owning the land

are people like indigenous Australians less evolved?

• no, they are just as evolved to their particular environment
• is control over nature the scale on which cultures should be measured?
• or did homo sapiens evolve separately in different places (probably not)
