• the Holocaust convinced them that they needed to take the lead
• school desegregation in the US was required only by Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954, which overruled "separate but equal"
• South Carolina public schools were not desegregated until 1963
• the Supreme court struck down laws against interracial marriage in Loving vs. Virginia in 1967 (sixteen states still had such laws)
  

Some scientists refused to give up eugenics and using race as a category

• more extreme ones argued that the new scientific ideas were politically motivated, which they were
• but the racist scientists refused to accept that their ideas were at least as much politically motivated
• they were ostracized by the scientific community--scientific journals refused to publish their work
  
• they were able to keep going with their own scientific journals because they were funded by some rich racists
