Update: the university has made no
decisions about COVID-19 response, and probably won't until
there is a case on campus or in the upstate
COVID=19 as an example of politically motivated science and
health policy
- it isn't going to spread
widely in most of the US
- the US won't be like China
because of different living patterns (population density)
and health
- we can keep it out by
limiting and monitoring travelers
- over the next 4 to 6 weeks
this will spread all over the US and more people will get sick
than a bad flu season
- we don't yet know this is
happening because it is too hard to get tested
- this is a new disease and no
one has immunity, plus you can be contagious before you
know you are sick and some cases are very mild
- this will spread faster in
the US because can't afford to go to the doctor and many
service workers don't have sick leave
After World War II scientists organized a clear rejection of
racism
- Science needs to teach people that racism is wrong
- Race is not a meaningful scientific category
- races shade gradually into each other
- genetic variation within races is very much
higher than variation between races
- 1950
UNESCO statement
- scientists have reached agreement that all
humans are members of the same species
- race is a myth, not a scientifically valid
concept
- ethnic categories were used instead, such as
African-American
- some scientists turned to examining other
differences between populations, such as blood type
- population is the scientific category
In this scientists were ahead of the society
- the Holocaust convinced them that they needed
to take the lead
- school desegregation in the US was required
only by Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954, which overruled
"separate but equal"
- South Carolina public schools were not
desegregated until 1963
- the Supreme court struck down laws against
interracial marriage in Loving vs. Virginia in 1967 (sixteen
states still had such laws)
Some scientists refused to give up eugenics and
using race as a category
- more extreme ones argued that the new
scientific ideas were politically motivated, which they were
- but the racist scientists refused to accept
that their ideas were at least as much politically motivated
- they were ostracized by the scientific community--scientific
journals refused to publish their work
- they were able to keep going with their own
scientific journals because they were funded by some rich
racists
- The Mankind Quarterly was a place to publish
racist research that scientific journals would not accept
- the issue in the picture has an article on
IQ in Muslim countries
