• some were new inventions
• new versions for new markets, such as a rugged minicomputer for military use
• improved chips

technological explosion

• new kinds of chips (integrated circuits)
• new things you can do with chips
• new ideas for products
  

protests against the Vietnam war sometimes protested the computer companies
but some protesters went into the new industry

• protests were shocking to many older people
• part of the concern about Vietnam is young men were being drafted and then sent to Vietnam where some of them were killed
• another part was that we were using technology to conduct the war in a way that harmed civilians more
  

it was a new idea for universities to encourage the commercialization of new technologies coming out of their research
one of the best markets for new technology was the military, which could mean more student protests
