Price paper topics and transition
Topic: Discuss a specific point and example from Price
and compare it with an outside case study, either past or
present. I would suggest that your focus be on some
aspect of the meanings we give to nature, but you may propose
a different focus. Your paper should be 4-5 double
spaced pages with references in MLA, Chicago or APA style.
- you don't need to look at a controversy but
you do need to have a thesis
- find another similar case and think about how
were the patterns the same, how were the patterns
different
- or you can research an argument against the
argument Price makes about some example
What does Price mean in writing about the meanings
we give to nature?
what different meanings over time have people given to the
passenger pigeon and its extinction?
- abundance from heaven--a symbol of the
extravagantly plentiful resources of the new world
- fun, sport, entertainment--hunting/fishing as
a competitive sport
- money on the wing--they are an economic
opportunity
- cultural bonding--a shared experience between
different regions to help unify the United States
- a cautionary tale of human greed
- we think nature can take care of itself but
we have more impact than we realize (that was new at the
time)
- tension between sport hunting/fishing and
commercial; the use of nature for middle/upper class
pursuits is seen very differently than those making a
living
- the difference is exaggerated
- should we bring back the passenger pigeon and
other extinct species--some people see nature as something
we can increasingly shape and control
- reintroduce them to nature?
- or keep them in zoos
- would that make us take extinction less
seriously
- how would it effect the ecosystem if you
release them in the wild
- what would the unintended consequences be?
- would that be too unnatural
how do the books we have discussed so far fit
together
